Legalize it?

Whilst procrastinating, I read Andrew Sullivan's blog and he had a posting about Marijuana.

The fact of the matter is Marijuana arrests (overwhelmingly for possession not distribution) are clogging up our prison systems and costing us all money.
Arrests totaled 829,627, an increase from 786,545 in 2005. Similar to previous years, 738,916 or 89 percent were for possession, not sale or manufacture, and marijuana possession arrests again exceeded arrests for all violent crimes combined.

OK. So on a practical level recreational marijuana should be legal. On a moral level it should also be legal (if alcohol and caffeine are legal). But I can still understand the arguments behind making it illegal. After all weed is a drug. What I CANNOT understand are the arguments (or lack of arguments) behind making medical marijuana illegal. This video sums it all up:

Fall Break!

If you aren't excited for Fall Break, then I don't know what school you go to.

Anyway, here are some stories of interest to help you pass some of the time you now have on your hands:

-Well that explains a lot: J.K. Rowling admits to a rapt Carnegie Hall audience that Dumbledore is gay.

-Brownback backs out: The Republican Field for President is now minus one.

-I Love you Tim: For those of you who a)Care about the Democratic control of the Senate and b)like South Dakota ;0

And for the mother of all Candidate sites (bi-partisan, created by Harvard of course):

Have a fabulous weekend!

Old News

In case you have completely buried yourself in your library carrel and haven't heard, Stephen Colbert has announced his plans to run for president.

Democrat or Republican? Depends on which Colbert you're talking about.

The point is, Dems are interested. Can he really run as both? What would happen if he did? What does this mean for the race? Or even the process of running for president as it is?

Pearsons, 9PM, Wednesday, October 24 - Come find out!

Wednesday's Meeting

If there is anyone who would like to help research John Edwards for this week's meeting, let me know! We'll be giving just a brief presentation (5-10) on his personal background, his Senate record, and current platform, etc. This will be the first in a series of features on the Democratic Candidates for President. Also, if you have any specific questions about Edwards, now's your time to ask!

Synergy and Collaboration

Synergy changed my life. Ok, well, not really, not in the spiritual or personal revelation sense at least. I mean that it introduced to a number of amazing people on campus and helped open up numerous two-way streets, so to speak, in which the Dems can provide politically specific viewpoints to issue specific groups and vice versa. Synergy Weekend, an off-campus retreat for student leaders and activists, was all about collaboration and groups working together, an idea that very much fits into the spirit of Dems this year. There is hardly an issue one can discuss in which the political dimensions are not relevant. Hence, I have spoken with leaders of groups pertaining to the war in Iraq, human rights and immigration, amongst others, about working to provide the current political perspective on issues to the groups while simultaneously learning more about the issues from the groups.

As Synergy Weekend proved, and as the dialogue between the Iraq Study Group, College Republicans and other Midd students on Monday night reiterated, great things can come out of collaboration. Come to Pearsons Lounge tonight at 9PM to help begin the research and planning process that will encourage further collaboration, dialogue and awareness on campus.

Discussion Group Follow-Up

Here's some quick follow up on the discussion group I posted about earlier.

At our first meeting, we decided we wanted to keep the group small, informal and nameless.
That being said, anyone who is interested in discussing issues is welcome to come.
This week we'll be discussing how a responsible American should interact with China in the context of the enviornmental, humanitarian, diplomatic and free speech transgressions they continue to commit.

So if you're interested shoot me an email at galtshul@middlebury.edu
